What to Look for in a Daycare or Preschool

Choosing a daycare or preschool is one of the most important decisions a family makes. In the DFW metroplex, there is no shortage of options. You have large national chains, home daycares, and small private centers all competing for your attention. Having choices is great, but the research process can feel completely overwhelming.

This guide cuts through the noise. These are the things that actually matter when you are evaluating a childcare program, along with the questions you should be asking before you commit to anything.

1. Licensing and Safety Standards

Every licensed daycare in Texas must meet minimum standards set by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. That includes staff-to-child ratios, background checks for all employees, facility safety inspections, and emergency preparedness plans.

Licensing is the floor, not the ceiling. Ask every center you consider what they do beyond what the state requires. How are incidents reported to parents? What does the drop-off and pick-up security process look like? The answers tell you a lot.

2. Curriculum, Not Just Activities

There is a real difference between a daycare that keeps children busy and one that follows a structured, research-based curriculum. A strong curriculum defines what children learn, why they learn it, and how it connects to developmental milestones by age group.

Ask every center you tour: what curriculum do you use, and why did you choose it? If the answer is vague or undefined, pay attention to that. Strong programs like Learning Beyond Paper, which drives Imagine Nation's classrooms, can name their curriculum and explain exactly why they use it.

3. Teacher Quality and Retention

Children form deep bonds with their caregivers. High teacher turnover disrupts those bonds and is one of the most reliable signs of a poorly run program. When you tour, ask how long the average teacher has been there, what professional development looks like, and how the center actually invests in its staff.

4. Communication with Parents

The best early childhood programs treat parents as partners. Look for centers that offer:

  • Daily or weekly progress updates, not just incident reports

  • An open-door policy for parent questions and concerns

  • Clear steps for addressing problems when they come up

  • Transparency about classroom activities, schedules, and daily routines

5. A Philosophy That Matches Yours

Whether a center is faith-based, play-based, bilingual, or academically focused, what matters most is alignment with your family's values. Tour the classroom. Watch how teachers talk with children. Notice whether the kids look engaged, curious, and comfortable.

Questions to Ask on Every Tour

  1. What curriculum do you use, and why did you choose it?

  2. What is your teacher-to-child ratio, and does it go beyond state minimums?

  3. How long have your lead teachers been here?

  4. How do you communicate with parents about my child's daily experience?

  5. What does your safety and security setup look like?

  6. What programs do you offer for my child's specific age group?

At Imagine Nation Learning Center, we welcome every one of these questions and will walk you through the answers in person when you come for your tour.
